Welcome to Șcheii Brasovului!
or:
Why you shouldn’t stop at Piața Sfatului (Council Square) when you visit Brașov.
Brașov means more than Piața Sfatului and the Black Church and the towers, bastions and stone walls of the old burg. It’s also Timpa; and the Citadel; Behind the walls; the paths leading to the mountain; and much more.
But above all it is Șchei neighborhood, the oldest district of Brașov, as full of history as the old Saxon citadel-city, with its St. Nicholas church, as supple as a mountain peak, and with its narrow and winding streets, with ups and downs through houses and hills.
I like this neighborhood a lot. I explored it as many times as I had the opportunity, I also wrote about it. It’s time to share and gather here at least a part of what I learned from my walks through Şchei.
So let’s proceed:
One of the most important places in Şcheii, from a cultural, historical and social point of view is certainly the First Romanian School (see the website here), whose history begins in the century. XI-XII. The current place was built in the years when America was just beginning to be discovered. Here we find not only the still living history of Romanians from Șchei, but also 4,000 very old books, some extremely rare; and over 30,000 other documents. Seeing this museum means much more than a simple visit: it’s a whole story!
Enjoy your walk!
